WHAT IS A CHARACTER COACH?

A volunteer committed to developing discipleship relationships with coaches and athletes.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN A CHARACTER COACH?

  • A follower of Jesus Christ
  • A trusted presence to coaches and athletes on a particular campus.
  • Prayerful and sensitive to discipleship opportunities.
  • Value sport as an Integral part of the lives of coaches and athletes, not just a platform for Ministry.
  • Comfortable in the athletic environment and committed to the needs of coaches, athletes, and school.
  • Relational and people oriented
  • Sacrificial and humble with a heart to serve
  • Trustworthy, credible, and accountable
  • Live what they preach
  • Above reproach in personal character

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CHARACTER COACH?

Engage

  • Prayer for and with coaches, athletes, and supporting staff
  • Connect coaches and athletes with the local church
  • Serve team through a ministry of presence by showing up to practices/games
  • Be available to help serve the coaching staff and team
  • Be ready and equipped to help in crisis moments

Equip

  • Team Devotions/ Small Group Bible Study
  • Lead team building activities
  • Assist in character development
  • Have a pulse of the program and alert the coaching staff to any critical issue
  • Build/Develop culture of team
  • Pre-game chapel and Sunday chapel service (Collegiate)

Empower

  • Invite and challenge coaches and athletes to pour into others
  • One on One mentorship: discipleship
  • Small group/ team huddle: teacher, facilitator

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO BECOMING A CHARACTER COACH?

  1. Meet with staff
  2. MLA
  3. E3 and character coach playbook training
  4. Shadow character coach
  5. Meet with coach
  6. Agree on schedule with coach/staff
  7. Run the play
